What are Small-scale technology certificates (STC)?

Small-scale technology certificates (STCs) are created for eligible installations of small-scale renewable energy systems including solar PV, wind, hydro, solar water heaters and air source heat pumps. An STC represents one-megawatt hour (MWh) of eligible renewable electricity from an accredited generator registered with the Clean Energy Regulator.

STCs are a financial incentive to install small-scale renewable energy systems by reducing upfront installation costs.

STCs are supported by the REC Registry, which facilitates the creation, validation, auditing and transfer of certificates.

STCs act as a form of currency that can be sold by installers to recoup a portion of the cost of purchasing and installing the system.

Is my project eligible for STCs?

Systems classified as a small generation units (including solar photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, and hydro systems) are eligible for STCs:

• Solar PV system size < 100kW
• Hydro systems < 6.4kW
• Wind System < 10kW

Projects must also fulfil the following criteria:

Newness: STCs must be claimed within 12 months of installing the system.

Accredited Installer: Systems must be installed by a licensed Clean Energy Council (CEC) installer, using approved CEC components.

Audit and Compliance: Projects must meet Aus/NZ standards and comply with all local, state, territory and federal requirements, including electrical safety.
